The main difference between file formats are raster and vector.
Raster images are compiled using pixels, or tiny dots. Each pixels contains unique color information and together these create the image. Increasing the size of a raster can cause an image to become pixelated or blurry.
Common Raster file formats are: .JPG, .PNG, .GIF, .PSD, .BMP, .TIFF, .PDF
Vector images are computer graphic images created through a sequence of commands or mathematical points, lines and shapes. These images remain smooth no matter how large or zoomed in it is. The most popular software programs used to create these graphics are Adobe Illustrator and CorelDraw.
Common vector file formats are: .AI, .SVG, .WMF, .EPS, .PDF (when saved from a vector program).
To edit these types of images you would need software that allows you to edit vector files. The correct software easily allows you to change the color, remove parts or add parts to the image, change the wording or font style and many other options.
