It’s the most wonderful time of the year as the popular Christmas song proclaims. And I love it all. Especially the busy weeks heading into the season when life is filled with baking, gift buying and wrapping, snowmen, Santas and holly.
These festive images are affecting, as is the holiday music. While the contemporary tunes, both new and old are always enjoyable, there’s no question in my mind that the most beautiful songs though, are the carols which speak of that holy night and serve to remind the world exactly what this celebration is all about.
Amid the tinsel and lights, Santa and presents, turkey and pumpkin pie, it often seems that the reason for the season is lost. But when we hear the words and melodies of Silent Night, O’ Holy Night or Joy to the World we are reminded in the most glorious of ways that this time of year Christians are celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ. Born in a manager in the little village of Bethlehem, he was believed to have been conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of a virgin. This was the birth of the new Messiah.
