Sometimes the right place at the right time happens, your camera and you are ready when the moment is there.
Such was the case when my granddaughter broke the pinata with help from Papa at her baby brother’s Cinco de Mayo-themed birthday party. Recovering from the initial surprise, her face was instantly transformed. You could hear the giggle and see the delight in her enchanting blue eyes.
The resulting photo had captured it all, but also for that reason what should have been the perfect picture of pigtails, sugar and spice, unfortunately had my little moppet looking more like snips, snails and puppy dog tails. The face was charmingly alive and full of wonderful innocence; the hands and face had taken a turn to the dark side, covered in filth after a carefree day of playing outside.
When looking for a picture for a competition recently, my daughter just couldn’t get that shot out of her mind and wondered what could be done in Photoshop. My experience with the software is limited. There is no way I could achieve the kind of results required (she was pretty dirty), so sent her on to her more experienced sister to complete the task.
However, I intend to practise. The ability to retouch pictures well, is probably one of the most useful tools to have. And besides, when it comes to little ones, being in the right place at the right time to capture the perfect look or mood isn’t always enough.
